A PEACEFUL NIGHT

when your whole world feels as if
it’s falling right on you
and the ones you love have fallen too
bleeding, hurting, crying…maybe dying

when hurt and fear compete with love
it’s time–time to let it go
say a prayer–swear–dare to believe
feel relief in the arms of comfort and peace

I know at those times
faith–once so elusive–beyond my mind
can turn and change the view in me–in you
and at those times peace no longer retreats

peace meets the challenge
light maybe dim at first accepts its call
and beckons hearts to unite
so we may sleep a peaceful night

What’s A Poem

what is a poem

what is my poem

when did it turn into a poem

it started out as an idea

or a frustration

or a joy

a tear

and needed expression

it didn’t know it was a poem

it maybe thought it was an antidote

to depression

a scapegoat

a relief

a way to move on

I guess we’re talking about

the definition a poem

criteria based

but we’re not

we’re talking about my poem

it serves a need

it meets its purpose

it does a good deed

it lets me breathe

halt

relieve

move on

I think it’s a hell of a poem

more thoughts on what makes a poem

my version

it’s breath

it’s life

it’s relief

it stops the terminal pain

it is an antidote

it can be positive

it can be negative

it can be neutral

it can be anything it wants to be

and it doesn’t even matter

because it is

it breathes

it lives

it is

that’s what makes it my poem

okay a poem

a poem

a four-letter word

did we know that

I didn’t

what changes the four letters

how are they positive vs. negative

how is it acceptable vs. off-color

maybe it is off-color

maybe we have black poems and red poems

and pink poems and purple poems

mine typically have a theme

they have a job to do

the job is to conclude whatever

experience needs expression

kind of  like impromptu acting

it gets out there and does its task

and gets the hell off

fast

poetry

art in the making

art for the taking

life validated, cremated, suffocated

shredded and gone

life experienced and won

life shared

the deed done
